The Toyota Land Cruiser (Japanese: Toyota Randokurūzā?) is a series of four wheel drive vehicles produced by the Japanese car maker Toyota Motor Corporation. It is not related to the Studebaker Land Cruiser car produced in the US from 1934 1954. Development of the first generation Land Cruiser began in 1951 as Toyota's version of a Jeep like vehicle and production started in 1954. The Land Cruiser has been produced in convertible, hardtop, station wagon, and utility truck versions. The Land Cruiser's reliability and longevity has led to huge popularity, especially in Australia where it is the best selling full size, body on frame, four wheel drive vehicle. Toyota also extensively tests the Land Cruiser in the Australian outback considered to be one of the toughest operating environments in both temperature and terrain. Main rivals include the Range Rover, Land Rover Discovery, Mitsubishi Pajero and Nissan Patrol.

Chronology
In 1941 the Imperial Japanese Army occupied the Philippines, where they found an old Bantam Mk II, and promptly brought it to Japan. The Japanese military authorities commanded Toyota to make a similar vehicle but to not model the appearance on the American Jeep. The prototype was called the Model AK and was formally adopted by The Japanese Imperial Army as the Yon Shiki Kogata Kamotsu Sha (type 4 compact cargot ruck).

Later in 1941 the Japanese government asked Toyota to produce a light truck for the Japan military campaign. Toyota developed a ½ ton prototype called the AK10 in 1942. The AK10 was built using reverse engineering from the Bantam GP. There are no known surviving photographs of the AK10. The only known pictorial representations are some rough sketches. The truck featured an upright front grille, flat front wheel arches that angled down and back like the FJ40, headlights mounted above the wheel arches on either side of the radiator and a folding windshield.

The AK10 used the 2259 cc, 4 cylinder Type C engine from the Toyota Model AE sedan with a three speed manual transmission and two speed transfer gearbox connected to it. There is no mechanical relationship between the AK10 and the postwar Toyota Jeep BJ. Most of the AK10's were not actively used (unlike the U.S. Jeep and there are almost no photographs of it in the battlefield.

The Mitsubishi Outlander is a crossover manufactured by Japanese automaker Mitsubishi Motors. It was originally known as the Mitsubishi Airtrek when it was introduced in Japan in 2001, and was based on the Mitsubishi ASX concept vehicle exhibited at the 2001 North American International Auto Show. The ASX (Active Sports Crossover represented Mitsubishi's approach to the industry wide SUV trend for retaining the all season and off road abilities offered by a high ground clearance and four wheel drive, while still offering car like levels of emissions, economy and size.

The original Airtrek name was chosen to describe the vehicle’s ability to transport its passengers on adventure packed journeys in a free as a bird manner, and was coined from Air and Trek to express the idea of footloose, adventure filled motoring pleasure. The Outlander nameplate which replaced it evoked a feeling of journeying to distant, unexplored lands in search of adventure.

The second generation of the vehicle was introduced in 2005 and all markets including Japan adopted the Outlander name, although production of the older version continued in parallel. It was built on the company's GS platform, and used various engines developed by Mitsubishi, Volkswagen and PSA Peugeot Citroën. PSA's Citroën C Crosser and Peugeot 4007, which are manufactured by Mitsubishi in Japan, are badge engineered versions of the Outlander.

Another feature which sets the Outlander apart from some other crossover SUVs is its Sportronic semi automatic transmission system sometimes referred The Airtrek, on the other hand, offers the additional option of a turbocharged engine. The North American version, however, only offers one engine, a 2.4 L I4 engine which produces a maximum of 160 hp and 162 ft·lbf of torque. The all wheel drive version uses normal (open) differentials for the front and rear axles, with a viscous coupling unit for the center differential.

All trim levels have the option of front wheel drive or all wheel drive. The North American version is available in three trim levels LS, XLS, and Limited. The Outlander is sold in Singapore and Brazil under the name Mitsubishi Airtrek, while in the rest of the world, it retains the Outlander nameplate. It was essentially a Japanese market Mitsubishi Airtrek with a modified, more aggressive looking front end. History Designed by Olivier Boulay, the Outlander was first introduced to North America in 2003.

It replaced the Challenger/Montero Sport as Mitsubishi's small SUV. Secondary competitors include the Pontiac Vibe, the Saturn VUE, Hyundai Tucson/Kia Sportage and the Ford Escape/Mazda CX 5. It is loosely based on the Mitsubishi Lancer platform, though its engine is derived from the Mitsubishi Galant. The Mitsubishi Outlander is a compact crossover SUV manufactured by Mitsubishi Motors.
